Local Legends

Jenny Lind Tower

Truro, MA

The Jenny Lind Tower rises improbably from the Truro moors of Cape Cod — a granite turret carried from a demolished Boston depot in 1927, named for the Swedish Nightingale. Cape telling gives the lonely tower her voice on the wind at dusk.

Quabbin Reservoir Drowned Towns

Belchertown, MA

Beneath the Quabbin Reservoir lie four Massachusetts towns — Dana, Enfield, Greenwich and Prescott — disincorporated and flooded in the 1930s for Boston's water. Their cellar holes edge the shores, their dead were moved, and valley telling keeps their bells.

Local Legends

Freetown-Fall River State Forest

Assonet, MA

Freetown State Forest darkens the heart of Massachusetts' Bridgewater Triangle — 5,000+ acres of Wampanoag homeland, the Assonet Ledge's legends, Profile Rock's honoured history and decades of strange telling that earned it the name of New England's most haunted woods.

Local Legends

Haywardville (Middlesex Fells)

Stoneham, MA

Boston's Middlesex Fells hide Haywardville — a rubber-mill village that thrived and vanished when the reservation came in the 1890s. Cellar holes and dam traces line Spot Pond's brooks, and Fells telling adds lantern lights and voices to the evening woods.
