What we collect

• Account details. When you sign in with Google or email through Supabase Auth, we receive the account information you provide or authorize, such as your name, email address and avatar. We do not receive your Google password.
• Your activity and contributions. This includes saved and visited places, Haunted Passport entries, visitor reports, evidence uploads, place submissions and business claims, along with information you include in them.
• Basic usage information. We may record page visits, interactions and technical information such as browser or device information and server logs. Share-link attribution helps us understand when a visit comes from a shared link.
• Location, when you choose to share it. If you use a nearby-place feature and grant your browser permission, your location is used to find places near you. You can decline or revoke that permission in your browser.

How we use information

We use it to provide your account, saved places and Passport features; find relevant places; process business claims; review submissions and evidence; prevent abuse; and improve the service. We also send necessary service emails, such as sign-in messages and responses to your requests.

Approved contributions may appear publicly with your display name. Information you choose to show on a public profile or through community features may also be visible to other visitors. Your sign-in email is not intended to be displayed as part of a public contribution. Do not include private contact details or other sensitive information in reports or uploads you want to publish.

Storage and service providers

We use Supabase, including PostgreSQL and file storage, for account and application data, and Vercel to host the site. Google provides optional Google sign-in, and Mapbox provides maps and related location services. These providers process information needed to deliver their services; for example, loading a map sends technical requests to Mapbox.

Provider processing and storage may take place outside your country. Their own privacy policies describe their handling of information. We may also disclose information when required by law or when necessary to protect people, accounts or the service.

We do not sell personal data.

Cookies and sessions

We use cookies and similar browser storage to keep you signed in and maintain your session and preferences. Basic usage measurement and share-link attribution may also use browser storage or information in links. Blocking cookies or clearing browser storage can sign you out or prevent account features from working.

Keeping and deleting data

We keep information for as long as it is needed to provide the service, manage your contributions or meet legitimate security and legal needs. Retention depends on the information involved; it is not a promise that every record is kept for a fixed period.

You can request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data, including deletion of your account, by emailing hello@hauntedplacesnearme.com. Please tell us which account or contribution your request concerns. We may need to verify your identity before acting.

We will remove your personal data on request, except information we must retain for legal obligations, security or resolving disputes. Backups may take longer to expire. If a public contribution contains your personal information, include its link in your request so we can address it too. Copies made by other visitors or search engines are not under our direct control.

Children

The service is not intended for children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information. If you believe a child has provided personal information, contact us so we can investigate and remove it. Young people should avoid sharing identifying details or precise personal locations.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the service changes. The last-updated date above shows when it was revised. If a change materially affects how we use personal information, we will provide an appropriate notice on the site or by email.
