The story
The Villisca Axe Murder House in Villisca, Iowa, was the scene of one of the most notorious unsolved crimes in American history: on the night of 8-9 June 1912, eight people, Josiah and Sarah Moore, their four children and two young houseguests, six of the victims children, were killed in their beds with an axe, and the case was never solved despite years of investigation and several trials. The modest white farmhouse has since been restored to its 1912 appearance, without electricity or plumbing, and is now opened for daytime historical tours and, controversially to some, overnight paranormal stays. Visitors and investigators report children's voices and laughter, sounds and footsteps, falling or moving objects and oppressive feelings inside the house. Given the horror of the real events and that children were among the victims, this record must be handled with particular gravity and sensitivity, presented as solemn history and unverified paranormal claims rather than entertainment.
