Overview
Allensworth stands restored on the San Joaquin Valley plain in Tulare County, California — the town Colonel Allen Allensworth, born enslaved and retired as the Army's highest-ranking Black officer of his day, co-founded in 1908 as a community wholly established, financed and governed by Black Americans: school, church, library and farms built in self-determination against the era's racism, until water table betrayal, railroad slights and the colonel's 1914 death in an accident checked the dream; the community persisted in reduced form, and California now preserves the townsite as Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park, its schoolhouse, homes and church restored, its annual rededication days gathering descendants — a landmark of Black history whose meaning leads this record absolutely. Visitor telling exists in the margins — footsteps in the schoolhouse, a presence in the colonel's house, voices on the wind — and stays in the margins, brief and hedged, beneath the founders' story.
