The story

Fort Laramie National Historic Site preserves the great crossroads of the Northern Plains in southeastern Wyoming — begun as a fur-trade post in 1834, purchased by the army in 1849 to guard the Oregon, California and Mormon trails, and central to the era's defining treaties: the 1851 and 1868 Fort Laramie Treaties with the Lakota, Cheyenne, Arapaho and other nations, agreements whose promises and betrayals shaped the Plains Wars — history the site interprets with the Indigenous nations' perspective told respectfully and first. A dozen restored buildings ring the parade ground, 'Old Bedlam' — the 1849 officers' quarters, Wyoming's oldest documented building — chief among them. Its telling is post-classic, traded by staff, living-history crews and evening-tour visitors: lights and laughter in Old Bedlam after dark, a sentry's figure by the parade ground, cavalry hoofbeats, a woman in period dress by the river walk — the 'Lady in Green' of older army lore — and voices in the restored barracks; undocumented, layered on a ground where many peoples' history ran deep. Present Fort Laramie as treaty-and-trail heritage first; details from NPS pages.
