The story

University Heights Center occupies the grand 1902 wooden schoolhouse on University Way in Seattle — gabled, bell-towered and among the city's oldest surviving school buildings, it taught U District generations until closure in 1989, when neighbours rescued it as a community centre whose classrooms now hold nonprofits, dance studios and farmers'-market Saturdays on the lawn. Its telling is schoolhouse-natural: staff, tenants and event visitors describe a child of house tradition — a girl in older accounts — on the main stairs and upper halls, footsteps crossing empty classrooms, doors opening and closing on their own schedule, chalk-and-paper scents with no source, lights, and voices in the auditorium; paranormal groups have investigated by arrangement and Seattle ghost features retell the accounts, which the centre carries with community-hall good humour. Identifications are tradition, undocumented, and the building's history records no anchoring tragedy. A working centre: visits mean its hours and events. Present University Heights as neighbourhood-rescue heritage first, its schoolchild telling the district's fond echo.
