Nine Men's Misery

Cumberland, RI

Nine Men's Misery at Cumberland, Rhode Island, marks where nine colonial soldiers were killed after Pierce's Fight in 1676 — called the oldest veterans' memorial in the U.S. The cairn in the old monastery woods is a solemn place of real deaths; its quiet telling follows at a respectful distance behind the history.
