Opened in 1908 as the Pennhurst State School and Hospital, the institution housed thousands of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Over the decades, allegations of overcrowding, neglect and poor living conditions led to widespread criticism, and the facility eventually closed in 1987. Following its closure, the abandoned buildings gained a reputation for unexplained activity and became a popular destination for paranormal investigators. Today, parts of the campus reopen each autumn as Pennhurst Asylum, a large-scale Halloween attraction featuring several themed haunted experiences within the former hospital buildings.
