About this attraction

Opened in 1829, Eastern State Penitentiary pioneered the controversial "Pennsylvania system" of solitary confinement, where prisoners lived alone in silence behind thirty-foot walls. Over its 142 years it held some 75,000 inmates — among them Al Capone and the bank robber "Slick Willie" Sutton — before closing in 1971 and falling into a long, crumbling ruin.

Today the stabilized ruin operates as a museum by day and, each autumn, as one of the country's most acclaimed haunted attractions. Visitors and night-watch staff have long reported shadowy figures in the cell blocks, echoing footsteps in the empty corridors, and a heavy, watched feeling inside Cell block 12 — stories that draw paranormal investigators and curious crowds in equal measure.

Cold spots in Cellblock 12

Went on a quieter weeknight. Cellblock 12 had a heavy, watched feeling and a genuine cold spot near the end cells that our whole group felt. Whether it's the building or your own head, it gets to you.

One night, two experiences

Great mix — you can do the scare houses and the real history tour in one night. The themed bars are a nice breather between attractions. Intense but not gory; my teens handled it fine.
