The story
Waldo Hall rises French-château-roofed at Oregon State University in Corvallis, completed in 1907 as the women's dormitory of the young agricultural college and named in honour of Clara Humason Waldo, the regent and farm-movement leader who championed women's education in Oregon; generations of women boarded, studied and were matron-supervised under its gables before the hall's conversion to offices and programs, and it stands on the National Register as the campus's grande dame. Its telling is dormitory-gentle, passed down through decades of campus press: footsteps on the upper floors after hours, doors opening along the old residential corridors, lights, a woman's figure — matron-like in the accounts — at the stairwell windows, and a watchful, unmenacing calm workers in the building describe; identifications range in telling from devoted house matrons to homesick students, none documented. A working university building: campus norms, residents and staff respected. Present Waldo as women's-education heritage first — Clara Waldo's monument — with its matron ghost the college's fond tradition.
