Local Legends

Roanoke Island

Manteo, NC

Roanoke Island, North Carolina, is the site of the 1587 'Lost Colony', whose settlers vanished leaving the word CROATOAN carved on a post. Around that enduring mystery has grown four centuries of legend — ghost lights in the woods, a white doe, and figures on the old shorelines.

Tar River

Tarboro, NC

The Tar River at Tarboro, North Carolina, carries one of the state's oldest legends: the Banshee of the Tar, said to wail along the water since a miller was killed by British soldiers during the Revolution. River walkers still speak of cries and mist-shapes on summer nights.

Local Legends

Maco light

Leland, NC

The Maco Light was North Carolina's most famous ghost light: a swinging glow along the rail line at Maco Station near Wilmington, told for a century as the lantern of brakeman Joe Baldwin, decapitated in an 1867 accident. The tracks are gone, but the legend endures.
