Rose and Crown Tavern

Staten Island, NY

The Rose and Crown Tavern of Staten Island served New Dorp from the 1660s and headquartered General Howe in 1776 — where, tradition holds, news of the Declaration reached the British command. Demolished in the 1850s, it survives as marker, memory and mild legend.
