This intact Federal-style rowhouse on East 4th Street was home to merchant Seabury Tredwell and his family from 1835 until his daughter Gertrude's death in 1933 at age 93. Gertrude reportedly refused to leave the family home even in death — staff and visitors describe seeing her small, dark figure in the front parlor and catching the faint smell of her rose perfume near the staircase. The museum has preserved the house and its original furnishings exactly as the family left them.

Built in 1832 and occupied by the Tredwell family from 1835 to 1933, the Merchant's House Museum is one of New York City's best-preserved 19th-century homes. It retains much of its original furniture and décor, offering a rare glimpse into domestic life in Victorian-era Manhattan.
