Hibbing High School was built in the early 1920s at extraordinary cost, paid for by the iron-mining wealth that literally moved the town of Hibbing, Minnesota, to reach the ore beneath it; its marble stairways, murals and 1,800-seat auditorium — hung with cut-glass chandeliers and modelled on the Capitol Theatre in New York — have earned it National Register listing and the nickname 'the castle in the woods'. Bob Dylan, its most famous alumnus, performed on that auditorium stage as a student. Its ghost lore is quieter than its architecture: staff, students and evening visitors have described footsteps in empty corridors, seats creaking and lights behaving oddly in the auditorium, and the sense of a presence in the balcony, sometimes linked in casual telling to devoted staff of decades past. No documented event anchors the stories, and they are traded as school lore rather than promoted.
