The Octoroon Mistress (Royal Street Legend)

New Orleans, LA

The legend of Julie — the 'Octoroon Mistress' of Royal Street — is French Quarter telling at its most sorrowful: a young woman of colour, bound to a white Creole under the plaçage system's cruelties, said to have died on a December rooftop proving a love the law forbade.
