The Octagon House

Washington, DC

An elegant Federal-style house near the White House in Washington, D.C., completed in 1801 for the Tayloe family and briefly home to President Madison in 1814-15 after the British burned the capital. It carries some of the city's oldest ghost stories, several of them tied to deaths said to have occurred on its dramatic spiral staircase.
